Cross-border activities can create tax obligations in more than one country. A double taxation treaty provides rules whose application depends on the treaty, the taxpayer and the income concerned.
Reviewing treaty benefits
Before claiming a benefit, it is necessary to establish the applicable treaty, tax residence and the relevant requirements. Panama's General Directorate of Revenue publishes treaty information and procedures for requesting benefits.
Distinct compliance frameworks
Tax treaties, information exchange and anti-money laundering standards serve different purposes. A reference to an international list does not establish whether a particular taxpayer is exempt from tax or entitled to treaty benefits.
The original article's treaty count and references to international lists have been removed because they should not be treated as current information. A business structure or the receipt of foreign income should be reviewed individually.
